Abstract:

Over the last decade the experimentation with Artificial Intelligence (AI) across society sectors has increased rapidly. This is also the case in the news sector, where applications of AI are now used in various processes of news gathering, production and dissemination in media. This trend has induced many new questions of how to use AI responsibly and it has led to an emerging body of new legislation on AI. This workshop will be based on research from the Horizon2020 project AI4Media and aim to bridge the knowledge gap between the questions being asked locally in news organizations and the emerging legislative landscape. First it will provide an overview of the emerging legal landscape and how it will impact the media sector based on findings from the report ‘Overview & analysis of the AI Policy Initiatives on the EU level’ and also present an overview of the ‘Initial Policy Recommendations for the use of AI in the media sector, which were developed in the project to inform future EU policy and legal initiatives. Second, participants will be invited to actively help map, what questions and challenges are currently left outside the scope of policy debates and legislation (National or EU level) and how could the EU better support newsrooms in developing and using AI in responsible ways (concrete measures, funding schemes etc.). This workshop will provide the chance for participants to actively help qualify and improve the final version of the policy recommendations, which will be submitted to the European Commission in August 2024.
