Abstract:

In formal learning settings, learners are guided/coached by a mentor who determines the learning process, defines scaffold learning activities and provides appropriate assessment. In non-formal learning settings, learners need to go through the same learning process, in order to learn, but on their own. EU projects on Life Long Learning promote the latter in order to bridge the gap from university to company performance. From a language learning perspective, in order to perform professional tasks and functions in foreign languages, both language and intercultural competences need to be well managed in the hands of the graduating students, especially in view of throwing themselves on the job market. In how far can virtual means be any help to gain awareness, autonomy and authenticity? How can students prepare themselves for online oral job (screening) interviews and obtain feedback from self-, peer- and expert assessments? CEFcult provides for scaling as to language proficiency and growth in intercultural communicative competence by means of 1. an open tool in which developers can insert their own assessment schemes and write scenarios 2. an open community or by signing up for one of the existing scenarios with assessment schemes. The tool is language and content independent.
