Abstract:

We report the case of a 69-year-old woman presenting with acute headache and vomiting due to severe hyponatremia induced by recently started treatment with a thiazide containing diuretic. This complication typically develops in thin elderly women in the first days after the start of treatment with thiazide diuretics. The pathophysiology is different from depletion hyponatremia typically seen in users of loop diuretics. We discuss the pathogenesis and treatment of hyponatremia in general and in this particular clinical presentation.
