Abstract:

A low-cost field regulating device for a wind ac generator was built and tested. It measures the wind speed, the rotor speed, compares these values and regulates the rotor speed in on-off mode by switching the field current. Thus the rotor speed oscillates around the optimal value, with a frequency determined by the way the various components are coupled to each other. Real conditions were simulated with a set of dc motors; a small shunt-motor simulated the cup anemometer, a series motor, driving a core alternator that loaded a battery, simulated the Darrieus-rotor.
