Abstract:

Three groups of nematode-free yellow European eel (Anguilla anguilla) were individually inoculated with three levels of third-stage infective larvae (L3) of Anguillicola crassus respectively. Inoculations were carried out weekly for 5 weeks. Body weight and mortality were monitored for 7 weeks. At the end of the experiment 10 eels per treatment group were sacrificed and the air bladder inspected for the presence of the parasite. It was concluded that (1) the inoculation technique used is suitable for application in experiments with eel, and (2) a low level of reinfections of eel with L3 of Anguillicola crassus impaired the development of the larvae of the parasite. © 1990.
