The overall objective of this PhD thesis is to explore the multifaceted concept of interoperability, with particular attention to the healthcare domain, to raise awareness about its significance despite its current lack of widespread implementation. Specifically, the thesis seeks to achieve the following key objectives: • provide a comprehensive overview of interoperability, elucidating its various dimensions, complexities, and significance; • explore the relationship between interoperability and healthcare, highlighting the potential impact of efficient interoperability in enhancing patient care, healthcare delivery, and overall system efficiency; • identify the prevailing challenges and existing solutions in the context of healthcare interoperability; • provide indications for possible solutions, both technical and not.
