Abstract:

Architectural education focuses primarily on visual outputs. Our drawings, models, concept diagrammes display what the architecture will look like, but the unidimensionality of this educational approach foregoes the actual ways in which people attach meaning to space. This is especially true for the home environment. Home is not just the visual appearance of the dwelling, but rather a multisensory experience involving smell, sound, touch, and so much more. We attach meanings based on social interactions; space acts as a structuring element in daily life happenings, without ever being fully determinative. Jakob will talk about his own research on the diverse homemaking processes for older adults in Flanders, and how we, as architects, may facilitate such multisensorial practices through more explorative approaches to architecture.
