Abstract:

Future engineers need to be prepared for lifelong learning (LLL) to keep up to date with new technological advancements. Unfortunately, there is no consensus yet as to what competencies underlie lifelong learning. It is known, however, that self-regulation is a malleable core competency of LLL. In an educational context, self-regulation can even be used as a proxy for LLL as a whole. To establish a baseline for engineering students' self-regulation, students of all study phases in three KU Leuven engineering faculties (Faculty of Engineering Science, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology) were asked to complete the Self-Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS) by Grant et al. (2002). This survey can be used to measure self-regulation and comprises three factors: need for self-reflection, engagement in self-reflection, and insight. In this seminar, the results will be presented and discussed.
