Abstract:

The analysis of internal movements in part 1 is based on two administrative data sources: the National Register and the Census database. Moving dynamics show similarities between the four participating cities, but also clear differences, especially between Antwerp on the one hand and the other three cities on the other. Within the four cities, people mainly moved from urbanised neighbourhoods to outside the cities, but the more urbanised neighbourhoods generally attracted relatively more 18-24-year-olds between 2015 and 2019 than they lost. Higher-educated people in Antwerp mainly live in inner-city neighbourhoods, while in Aalst, Roeselare and Sint-Niklaas, this group's share is particularly high in neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city and beyond. The neighbourhoods where many higher educated people move to are generally better provided, more easily accessible and have a higher share of new construction than neighbourhoods where few higher educated people move to. Part 2 presents the results of a survey of motives for moving disaggregated by three types of movers (those moving within a city, those coming from outside the city to the city and those moving away from the city). Existing knowledge on moving motives is confirmed. Moving motives are primarily related to changes in family situation. In addition, motives related to the house (especially size of the indoor space but also the outdoor space) and to the neighbourhood (such as parking facilities, noise, greenery ...) come into play. Tenants' desire for ownership and motives related to location (of social network and work) also play a role. The differences in motives between the three types of movers provide additional insights into the importance of factors such as characteristics of the city or the attractiveness of a specific location. Push factors can be being too busy, meeting parking problems... while pull factors can be liveliness. The influence of these factors again differs between the three types of movers.
