Abstract: The thermodynamic description of the stress-induced martensitic transformation, (as introduced by Wollants, De Bonte and Roos 7)), is critically reviewed and some comments are made on the equivalency of (force F, length L) and (stress sigma, strain epsilon) as conjugated pairs of thermodynamic variables. In that context, the reversible work of uniaxial elastic deformation, the characteristic function and phase stability, and also the Clapeyron-like equation for the univariant two-phase equilibrium are discussed. It is further discussed how the reversible work performance associated with the pseudoelastic transformation can be calculated and how the transformation entropy and the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature T(O) can be determined within the range of experimental uncertainty.
