Abstract: The synthesis of alumina particle reinforced metal matrix composite was conducted using aluminothermic reduction of Cu++ from CuO by pure aluminum through powder metallurgy route. Experimental results show that the reduction of Cu++ from CuO in the Al-CuO system is a two-step in-situ reaction process which involves the formation of intermediate phase Cu2O. The reduction of Cu++ into Cu+ in the studied system starts below 650 degreesC, andfinishes, at about 750 degreesC The reduction of Cu+ into Cu and the formation of CuAl2 take place between 850 degreesC and 950 degreesC.
