Abstract: The influence of different metal powders on the thermal decomposition of polyvinyl formal and polymethyl methacrylate was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that metal powders catalyse the degradation process and accelerate the weight loss of the polyvinyl formal but not the polymethyl methacrylate. The catalytic effect depends on the metal powder and polymer used, on the specific surface area of the powder, and on the mass (volume) ratio of the polymer to the metal The powders evaluated were stainless steel, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Mo. Potential catalytic effects must be taken into account when changes are made in the metal powder or binder composition.
