Abstract: Shape memory alloys can exhibit a high damping capacity during transformation or when they are in the martensitic state. Since the internal friction is strongly related with the interaction between defects and interfaces (beta/martensite or martensite/martensite), the damping capacity will strongly depend on the mobility, the distribution and the concentration of those defects and interfaces. Especially, the two-phase region, i.e. during transformation, exhibits peculiar behaviour described by several models.
