Abstract: When using Pt/Rh wires to mount alumina crucibles during high temperature oxidation experiments, one should take into account the weight loss of the wire due to evaporation. During the oxidation of SiAlON ceramics, rhodium condenses on the specimen and renders the weight gain versus time data unsuitable for further investigation. Thermodynamic calculations also indicate a possible reaction of RhO2 gas with other materials such as SiC, MoSi2, TiB2, TiC, TiN and AlN.
