Abstract: With the abolishment of the frontiers within the European Community, transport distances for animals have increased considerably. The consumer demand for quality meat, as related to animal welfare and consumer health is turning the question of animal transportation into a subject of debate. Animal welfare can be quantified in terms of a range of parameters such as observation of behaviour, heart rate, body temperature, hormonal, enzymatic and immunological measurements. On the basis of these parameters, recommendations can be formulated concerning loading and unloading, loading density, mixing with unfamiliar conspecifics in the loading space, journey time, and recuperation time after transport.
