The effects of application of sludge obtained from the treatment of wastewater coming from the malt-house and the brewery of Brewery Artois in Leuven, were investigated for a culture of sugarbeet and corn. The mineral content of the sludge mixture was quite high, especially for Ca, Mg and P. Heavy metals were hardly present and their presence was certainly not more pronounced than the levels found in other organic and inorganic fertilizers. Applications up to 45 ton/ha in dry matter did not have any negative influence on yield and mineral content of sugarbeet and corn. No deficiency or toxicity symptoms were observed. Application of the sludge mixture increases the amount of organic matter in the soil which is favourable for soil structure and provides minerals at long date. Consequently the sludge mixture may be a valuable supply of minerals and organic matter and is, within the range investigated, suitable for use in agriculture.
