A total of 127 rotifer species is identified from 18 zooplankton samples collected in the North of Papua New Guinea. The description of a hitherto unknown Scaridium is presented, the taxonomy of Lepadella biloba HAUER (n. stat.) discussed. The majority of species found is cosmopolitan or cosmotropical, some (8 %) are restricted to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World and Notogaea, one was previously known from Australia only. Rotifer zoogeography is discussed in the light of contemporary taxonomic and faunistic knowledge.
