The Flemish dioceses realize that a greater missionary awareness is necessary for the continuation of the Christian faith within a Flemish context. Pope Francis states that every culture contains positive models that can shed light on how to understand the Gospel (EG 116). In this contribution we want to consider how the Anglican-Methodist church model of Fresh Expressions of Church can provide inspiration in a Flemish Catholic context. Pope Francis also points out that what he says and writes is not just a one-to-one fit, but that people should distinguish where the priorities lie and which translations are possible. In this article we first look how the missionary theme is directly or indirectly addressed in five different diocesan texts and in two inter-diocesan texts. Secondly we look what the modern missionary initiative Fresh Expressions of Church means in Britain, to conclude with a dialogue between the presented elements. We try to consider what it might mean to be a missionary Church in Flanders. We deliberately don’t avoid terms as mission, missionary, missionaries, because we are convinced of the necessity to let emerge a qualitative approach of mission instead of a quantitative approach.
