Abstract: This thesis zooms in on the the social, familial, educational and ecclesiastical background of episcopal candidates in post-Carolingian Western Francia and on the parties involved during their appointment process. In particular, I have analyzed the representation of the bishops of the church province of Reims in the 'long' tenth century (888-1049) in narrative, epistolary, diplomatic and commemorative sources from the tenth and eleventh centuries, in comparison with the extensive corpus of church legislation on episcopal appointments.
