Abstract: The article presents the use of the concept of “covenant”
ברית) ) in the Dead Sea Scrolls and analizes the evolution which can be seen in these texts (particularly in the Damascus Document and in the Rele of the Community) compared
with the concept of “covenant” of the Old Testament. This evolution is made concrete in the use of the expression “new Covenant” in the Damascus Document, where
the expression implies not only the “renewal” of the mosaic covenant prophesized by Jeremiah as applied to the group or groups behind the Damascus Document, but also a real “novelty”: the reduction of its meaning and the transfer of the covenant between God and Israel to those who freely decide to join the group and enter in the “new covenant” in order to faithfully observe of the “hidden things” of the Law of Moses which have been revealed to
them and which are not observed by the rest of Israel.
