Substanz denken. Aristoteles und seine Bedeutung für die moderne Metaphysik und Naturwissenschaft pages:67-79
Starting from the current debate about modular versus holistic accounts of cognitive capacities, the paper raises an antecedent question, i.e. whether or not cognitive capacities belong to the essence of animals such as we are. In the course of a thought experiment, two counterfactual scenarios are invented to test the intuitions of both essentialists and anti-essentialists. It turns out that essentialism fares slightly better in the discussion than anti-essentialism. This result sheds new light on the holism vs. modularism debate about cognitive capacities. It shows that the alternative is not exhaustive.
