The ground state properties of krypton isotopes have been investigated by collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy. The chain of isotopes under study ranges from the neutron deficient Kr-72 (N = Z = 36) to the neutron rich Kr-96 (N = 60). For neutron numbers N less than or equal to 45 an unusual inverted odd-even staggering is observed. In contrast to the N = 60 isotones in Rb, Sr and Zr, the new isotope Kr-96 is not strongly deformed.
