Investigation of nuclear moments and radii of lutetium isotopes

The systematics of nuclear ground state properties in the rare earth region was extended to the lutetium isotopes (161-179)LU by collinear laser spectroscopy measurements. Both the ground states and 10 isomeric states in the vicinity of the stable (175)LU were investigated. The changes in mean square nuclear charge radii and the quadrupole moments show an increase of deformation above N = 90, saturating around N similar or equal to 100. First direct spin measurements were obtained for a number of neutron-deficient isotopes. The magnetic dipole moments and electric quadrupole moments allow the identification of all states as rather pure Nilsson configurations.
