Epitaxial ferromagnetic (tau mna1/co) and (co/coa1) multilayers on gaas (001) grown by molecular-beam epitaxy

The epitaxial growth using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of novel magnetic superlattices Co/CoAl and tau MnAl/Co on AlAs/GaAs is reported. The experimental conditions for the growth are described and illustrated by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Structural information obtained from transmission electron microscopy demonstrates the epitaxy, and clear evidence for a superlattice structure is obtained for tau MnAl/Co structures. Co/CoAl superlattices show magnetic anisotropies in the plane of the film. The successful epitaxy of tau MnAl/Co on AlAs/GaAs leads to a magnetic superlattice for which the constituent layers display orthogonal magnetizations: in the plane of the film for the Co layers (4-8 Angstrom thick) and out of the plane for tau MnAl (7-15 Angstrom thick).
