Abstract: Inspired by the seminal work by Marie J. Aquilino, (Beyond Shelter: Architecture for Crisis, 2011) this summer school draws attention to “crises” the broadest possible sense of the word, ranging from natural and man-made disaster, conflict- and environment-induced displacement, returning diaspora, conditions of precariousness, neglect and/or repression, etc. As populations worldwide continue to agglomerate in urban areas, cities become ever more vulnerable to this kind of crises. Therefore the course reflects on the relationship between architecture and urbanism. Through a series of nine sessions, it examines the role of planners, architects and designers in their engagement with different stakeholders and with the practice of planning, designing, building and managing the built environment in crisis situations.
