A growing number of allergen components, recombinant or purified, are becoming available for in vitro allergy diagnosis. The presence of IgE antibodies can be
measured on different platforms, such as the ImmunoCAP and the Immuno-Solid phase Allergen Chip (ISAC) system.
The aim of the present paper is to give a brief overview of the most important food allergen components in children and of their characteristics, in order to help
discriminate between genuine sensitization and cross-reactivity and between the likelihood of local versus systemic reactions.
