We report on the formation of Sn nanoclusters in a thermally grown SiO2 film after annealing under different atmospheres. We study the different lattice positions before and after annealing with Mossbauer spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent measurements show an extreme reduction in the Debye temperature of 36% for the samples annealed in a reducing atmosphere. We show that this difference could be explained by the appearance of low lying surface modes due to the cluster embedment, (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B,V. All rights reserved.
