Abstract: In an article on "agency, time, and causality" Thomas Widlok has discussed how information about causality can be retrieved from ethnographic monographs. The present article raises the problem that cross-cultural comparison of causality-related concepts involving personhood and magical powers may be problematic because of the lack of an unambiguous "physical" basis of comparison. Hence a possible basis of comparison is proposed on the basis of a presumed cognitive universal. It is shown that this approach may be complementary to Widlok's ethnographic approach and may contribute to bridge the gap between ethnographic and experimental approaches of cognition
