Abstract: A stochastic optimization model is presented for surgery admission scheduling in hospitals. By means of chance-constraints, the model aims at managing the risk for bed shortages in nursing wards. The efficient usage of the operating theatre (OT) is achieved by minimizing the expected OT over- and underutilization. The model is solved by means of sample average approximation and a metaheuristic algorithm. It is used to develop four admission strategies that are compared in a computational study.
