Abstract: The port market has been analyzed from many different viewpoints. In this paper, several market segmentations were used to investigate how the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam evolved since the 1980s. Previous research was always concentrated on one of these market segmentations separately and was often limited in time. The added value of this paper is the combination of all existing segmentations in one analysis and a broader time frame. The goal is to provide an image of how the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam have performed in terms of market share and growth in the past and how both ports will likely evolve in the future. In this respect, the positioning of the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam in its competitive market - the Hamburg-Le Havre range are analysed in much more detail, as well as the positioning of the different strategic traffic groups within these ports, and this for the period 1980-2012.
