This research report covers the results of a study that we carried out to investigate the effect of possible improvement strategies to boost the punctuality of a Belgian airline company. The study was carried out in two parts. First, we analyzed the performance of an existing airline network. Research targets that were set for this part included a disclosure of the most important delay reasons, insight into the performance of airports
in the network, a verification of the presence of any propagation of delay, etc. In a second part, we built a simulation model to evaluate several strategies to improve
the network punctuality. In that respect, we developed a preliminary version of a user friendly simulation environment to analyze the impact of published block times, aircraft swapping rules, spare aircraft availability and other factors on the punctuality.
We built a template in the simulation package ARENA, that allows for a quantitative punctuality evaluation of a particular network proposal. The ARENA template allows
the user to construct any network of choice with an unlimited number of carriers, flights and line stations and returns a number of useful output measures enabling the user to validate the quality of his particular network proposal
