Abstract: Sources of space weather phenomena like Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and shock fronts in the interplanetary space will be investigated, as well as their effects on Earth. The main aim of the project is to fill the gap between the two key elements in space weather predictions, i.e. observational data of the Sun and the solar wind, and numerical simulations of magnetic plasma clouds.In this project we propose to tune numerical simulations and observational data more closely from two different perspectives: First, we will visualise numerically simulated coronalmass ejections in the same way the current solar coronagraphs observe aplasma cloud. Secondly, we want to improve the quality of numerical simulations by using observed and thus very realistic boundary conditions in the (existing) numerical codes. This will certainly enhance the predictive nature of the simulations and thus directly affect the quality of space weather predictions based on these simulations.We believe that this project will highly improve both the physical insight in space weather phenomena and the predictions of their impact on Earth.
