The Faculty of Arts unites a large number of ‘cultural sciences’, such as archaeology, history, history of art, musicology, linguistics, and the study of literature. Research and teaching at the Faculty focus on the cultural development of humankind from prehistory to the present, both in the Western and the non-Western world. The Faculty offers 10 academic bachelor’s degree programmes and a wide variety of Dutch- and English-language master’s and doctoral degree programmes. Research mainly concentrates on the (historical and contemporary) cultural developments and intercultural relations in Northwestern Europe (with special attention for the Low Countries) and the Eastern Mediterranean area.
