Abstract: In this article I have shown that by not overtly focusing on unity in the 10th assembly theme of the WCC, the calls from feminist and liberation theologies to reconsider notions of unity has yet again been lost, as unity has been taken to be the default position of the ecumenical movement. I have argued, however, that we need an uneasiness with the term unity, an uneasiness that can be captured in Venturi’s notion of the “difficult whole” and that it is this very uneasiness that will produce more creative engagement in the service to fullness of life, justice and peace.
