Abstract: Recently, a number of authors have discussed the role of competences for education for sustainable development. This has resulted in comprehensive lists of such competences. In a complementary vein, some authors proposed pedagogical tools for education for sustainable development. However, only a few authors have explicitly linked between competences and pedagogies. This paper accrues pedagogical approaches for education for sustainable development, connecting them to the relevant competences through hermeneutical ponderings. The paper proposes a framework to bridge this theoretical chasm, with the aim to provide educators with clearer guidance to incorporate the competences for sustainable development into curricula, therefore, better preparing the future leaders, decision makers, and change agents for sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow.
