Title: Translation and the third language in Belgium
Authors: van Doorslaer, Luc

Conference: Translation in Contexts of Official Multilingualism location:Moncton, Canada date:1-3 November 2012
Abstract: The paper will present the results of recent research about the translational situation in German-language Belgium, more in particular the relationship between the legal situation (translation rights) and actual translation practice. From a methodological point of view a large corpus of media texts was used as indicators for ‘linguistic injustice’ or abuses. The translational situation will be related to the paradoxical position of German in this context: the biggest language in the European Union, but the smallest language in Belgium. Ultimately this presentation will deal with linguistic and translational power relationships.
