Abstract: The (critical) attitude of three major thinkers, representing each of the three monotheistic traditions, i. e. al-Ghazālī (Islam), Maimonides (Judaism) and Thomas Aquinas (Christianity) is analyzed, showing, in spite of a common emphasis on the limits of human reason, a positive evaluation of the (philosophical) critical human reason. In the final part of the paper, special attention is paid to the attitude of the medieval Christian theologian-philosopher Yaḥyā ‘ibn ‘Adī, who was actively involved in the Christian-Islamic dialogue.
