Abstract: Oligonucleotides containing monomers 1-(2,3-dideoxy-beta-D-erythro-hexopyranosyl)thymine; 1-(2,4-dideoxy-beta-D-erythro-hexopyranosyl)thymine; 1-(3,4-dideoxy-beta-D-erythro-hexo-pyranosyl)-thymine; 1-(2,3-dideoxy-alpha-D-erythro-hexopyranosyl)thymine; 1-[2,3-dideoxy-3-C-(hydroxymethyl)-alpha-L-threo-pentopyranosyl]-thymine; and 1,5-anhydro-2,3 -dideoxy-2(thymin-1-yl)-D-arabinohexitol were modeled and synthesized. Only oligonucleotides constructed of 1,5-anhydrohexitol nucleosides are able to hybridize with natural DNA.
