Abstract: This article studies the role of transnational memory in Antonio Muñoz Molina’s novel Sepharad, making use of Micharl Rothberg's concept of multidirectional memory. It argues that the work is a clear example of transnational memory, in which transnationality is mobilised mainly with the purpose of broadening and unsettling Spanish national memory. By focusing on the human experience of victimisation, the work privileges a universalist, dehistoricising approach over the politically oriented approach of multidirectional memory.
