Abstract: On the basis of Belgian administrative micro-data, we estimate in various models the impact of retirement incentives on retirement behavior. We found that making the system actuarially fair at the margin increases the retirement age, decreases income inequality among the retired and improves the viability of the system. The dismantlement of early retirement schemes risks, ceteris paribus,to increase older unemployment. To avoid poverty persistence among elderly, the implementation ofactive labour market policies(to avoid depreciation of human capital and demotivation) among older unemployed is therefore suggested.
