Abstract:

This article discusses the international legal framework for marine protected areas (MPAs). Part 1 of the article analyses the general international legal framework for MPAs. Part 2 describes the European regional initiatives with respect to the North-East Atlantic and those in the framework of the EU. In the concluding part some remarks relating to possible future perspectives with respect to MPAs are formulated.
