Abstract: This article focuses on Multatuli as a critic of religion. It first deals with the path that led Multatuli from the religious man he was as a youngster to the outspoken atheist he became after the publication of his masterpiece Max Havelaar. The article then goes on to deal with the main aspects of religion that Multatuli considered to be harmful for humanity and which he therefore fought with all his might. Finally, an analysis is provided of some of his statements about other religions as well.
