Brussels and Europe/Bruxelles et l'Europe pages:219-233
The presence of European and international institutions has had a positive impact on the regional and urban economy. This presence contributed to the international notoriety of Brussels and generated large flows of money, stimulating employment, income and prosperity. It also helped to keep the public infrastructure up-to-date. There are also some critical elements, mainly the fundamental disequilibrium at the labour market in Brussels. Up to now the presence of the international institutions did not bring a solution to this problem. Other problems which need to be adressed are the increasing congestion and the growing income inequality.
