Abstract: During the last few years, energy demand increased drastically, resulting in a conflict between energy supply and demand. The sustainable and conscious use of energy is a must, that is often indicated with the term ‘rational use of energy’. In this thesis, the general concept of ‘rational use of energy’ is analyzed both from a theoretical and from a practical point of view. Different initiatives to promote energy savings and the rational use of energy in Flanders are discussed, including some remarkable projects in Flemish companies.
