Abstract: This article focuses on the relationship between the French songwriter Pierre-Jean De Béranger and the Dutch author Multatuli. During the first half of the 19th century De Béranger was extremely popular in Europe, so that it is no real surprise that his name is mentioned a couple of times in Multatuli's oeuvre. It is however exceptional that Multatuli, who was neither fond of rhyme nor of versifiers, nevertheless declared that he liked De Béranger and his work. The first part of this article describes De Béranger's influence in Europe, the second part cites and discusses the different passages where Multatuli mentions him, and the third and last part tries to explain why Multatuli liked De Béranger's oeuvre so much.
