Vasculitides and other systemic diseases with renal involvement: overview.
The different systemic diseases in which the kidneys may be involved, are briefly discussed. Glomerulonephritis is frequently observed in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's), microscopic polyangiitis, Henoch-Schönlein purpura, cryoglobulinemic vasculitis and lupus nephritis. Involvement of the renal arteries may occur in Takayasu's arteritis and in polyarteritis nodosa. In the latter, also smaller intrarenal arteries may show aneurysmatic or stenotic lesions. Distal tubular acidosis is encountered in Sjögren's syndrome, while progressive systemic sclerosis can be complicated by a "scleroderma renal crisis", which presents some similarities with thrombotic thrombo-cytopenic purpura. In chronic periaortitis, the ureters can be compressed by the periaortic inflammatory tissue.
