A case can be made for saying that Cardinal Willebrands understood the development of the ecumenical movement in the light of J.H. Newman’s analysis of the way in which the Christian truth comes to expression in history. More precisely, Willebrands saw the ecumenical movement as contributing to the full manifestation of Christian truth.
