The first part of this paper diagnoses the feasibility of vowel identification by means of an experimental formant analysis. At the same time, we will explain the usefulness of this acoustic analysis in the field of teaching French as a foreign language in Swaziland. In the second part, we justify our method of instrumental formant analysis. The measurements are statistically tested with the T-test, which allows us to concentrate on the significant differences between the siSwati and French bases of articulation. In order to illustrate the differences, we finally juxtapose the respective vowel quadrilaterals.
