Abstract: Regardless of their lower salary, women are at least
as satisfied with their salary as their male colleagues.
Studies examining this ‘paradox of the
contented female worker’ often used the Pay
Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ). Whether this
instrument is measurement invariant across gender,
however, has not been previously tested. To avoid
rash conclusions, the present study submitted PSQ
data of 699 female and 448 male employees to a
series of measurement invariance tests. The results
supported the gender invariance of the measurement
of pay satisfaction by the PSQ, assuring now
that it is an appropriate instrument to examine the
illustrated paradox.
