Abstract:

By tradition, Belgian hospitals can legally be organized as privately and publicly managed organizations. Earlier studies indicate that both types of hospitals seem to favor a single uniform legal structure. Such a uniform structure would be more easily achieved if both private and public companies had a shared vision about certain management topics. With this survey, we investigate whether or not privately and publicly managed hospitals share similar visions of management issues such as human resource management, legal structure, potential partnerships, and public financing. The results indicate that the simple fact of being privately or publicly organized leads to very divergent views of these management issues.
